Lectures by Professor Ben Tilghman

The years between 1400 and 1600 were a dynamic time in European history and the dramatic changes in culture are mirrored in the art of the time. These three lectures will explore Northern Renaissance Art from different thematic perspectives to offer new insights into the period. Along the way, we will encounter famous artists such as Albrecht Dürer, Jan van Eyck, and Hieronymus Bosch, but we will also consider lesser-known artists and artworks that can broaden our understanding of this complicated era in art history. The series will culminate in a field trip to the Philadelphia Museum of Art to see some of the masterworks of this period in person.

*The lecture series will culminate with an optional bus trip to the Philadelphia Museum of Art on Saturday, June 13th

Member’s cost for all three lectures: $60
Non-member’s cost for all three lectures: $80

Ben Tilghman is an associate Professor fo Art History and the chair of the Art + Art History Department at Washington College
